Redefining Success in the Church
For years, churches have been told that success means more people in the pews.
Pastors are asked, “How many people attend your church?”
Growth is measured by weekly attendance reports.
A church is considered “successful” if the numbers look good.
But what if attendance is the wrong measurement?
What if the true measure of a church’s success is impact, not numbers?
Why Attendance Is Not Enough
While it is good for people to gather for worship, simply having people in the building does not mean they are being transformed.
A church may have 500 people attending but few engaged in discipleship.
A congregation may be growing numerically but shrinking spiritually.
Many churches have become content with filling seats rather than equipping people for mission.
Jesus Never Measured Success by Crowd Size
Jesus drew large crowds, but He was never concerned with keeping them comfortable.
In John 6, after a difficult teaching, many disciples left Him. He did not chase after them—He focused on those who truly wanted to follow.
In Matthew 28, Jesus did not tell His followers to gather crowds—He commanded them to make disciples.
Success in the Kingdom of God has never been about how many people gather, but about how many lives are changed.
What Churches Should Measure Instead of Attendance
A mission-driven church focuses on impact over numbers. Here are some key questions to ask:
Are people being discipled?
Are there systems in place to help new believers grow?
Are mature Christians mentoring younger believers?
Are people serving and using their gifts?
A thriving church has high engagement, not just high attendance.
Are people actively involved in ministry, outreach, and service?
Is the church impacting the community?
A church on mission will be known in the city, not just inside its walls.
Are people outside the church experiencing God’s love through the ministry?
Are members sharing their faith?
If church members are not spreading the Gospel, the church is not growing.

The Churches That Will Thrive Are Those That Prioritize Impact Over Numbers
A packed building means nothing if people are not growing in their faith.
A large membership means nothing if members are not engaged in mission.
The churches that will be strong in the future are those that measure success by Kingdom impact.
If your church is ready to shift its focus, transform its culture, and make disciples, the Focus On Mission book series is the perfect tool to guide the process.
