What you measure reflects what you value.

In many churches, success is still gauged by attendance, giving, and event turnout. But what if we shifted to tracking Gospel impact? What if things like disciples made, leaders developed, and lives transformed were counted instead?

To become a Great Commission church, you must measure what moves the mission forward. Just collecting people inside a church building for Sunday morning worship is not a missional movement, and it’s certainly not the one Jesus modeled for us.

Pastors and church leaders often say, “If we just get 200 people in worship, we’ll be a healthy, growing church.” I’m not sure why 200 is the magic number, except that someone “did the math” and calculated that 200 church members paid the bills.

The Problem With Traditional Church Metrics

Traditional metrics are easy to count:

  • Weekend attendance

  • Tithes and offerings

  • Volunteer hours

But these often reveal surface-level activity. A church can have strong numbers and still be stagnant spiritually. I’ve seen churches of 200 or more become so internally focused on preserving their way of doing church that the Great Commission was not even on their radar. And there are certainly cases where this leads to toxic cultures and consumerist mentality.

The Great Commission Scorecard

Instead, track metrics like:

  • New believers reached and baptized

  • Personal invitations extended

  • Discipleship pathway participation

  • Small group multiplication

  • Community engagement impact stories

  • Testimonies shared and Gospel conversations

These tell you how well your church is living the mission.

How To Start Measuring Mission Health

  1. Clarify your goals. What does success look like for your church missionally?

  2. Use tools like Focus On Mission to provide discussion questions and reflection prompts tied to key areas of growth.

  3. Make space for testimonies and story sharing during staff meetings, services, or newsletters.

  4. Review monthly and adjust. If what you’re doing isn’t producing Great Commission outcomes, pivot.

Lead With a Kingdom Mindset

Jesus never said, “Go and increase attendance.” He said, “Go and make disciples.”

Your team needs reminders. Your church needs vision. Your members need inspiration and clarity.
