How old are you? Depending on your answer, you’ll have a unique worldview about aging. Some who are reading this are young. They don’t think much about death. Others are from an age bracket that generates a different perspective. These realities are likely obvious to most of us. However, what about the life cycle of your church?
Throughout history, Christian congregations have been birthed by mission-minded Christ-followers. At the same time, many churches begin to subtly age. The next step for those churches is often a slow decline—and eventual closure. Hundreds of once-thriving churches close every day.
While it is ironic—and tragic—Christian congregations can experience death. The sad reality is that most church people turn a blind eye to the reality of decline and extinction. If you analyze the median age of those in worship at your church at a time of 10 years ago, how would that match up with the median age today? For many churches, unnoticed decline signals impending death. In most cases, those churches are surrounded by unreached unbelievers. This represents a tragic outcome for the Christian movement.

And what is God saying to you and to your church? And—what are you going to do about it?
