In this first training video, Jeremie introduces himself and explains the 5 Gears.

He talks about how every person we’ve ever met wants 2 things: 1) To be successful in their endeavors (even though many define success differently), and 2) to build deep and meaningful relationships with those around them.

In light of that, we all face the tension between work/life balance.

Personal growth and development can be broken down into 3 major areas: 1) Hard Skills or IQ, 2) Self-Awareness, and 3) Relational Connectivity.

When you think back to the person who has had the greatest impact and influence on your life, it was most likely due to their ability to connect and be present with you, not as a result of knowing their Myers-Briggs type or having a high IQ.

Connectivity is important and yet it’s one of the biggest issues facing us as “busy adults”.

Most of our lives, the “training” we undergo focuses on developing our IQ or hard-skills. Think back to primary school, college, and even most training programs inside our organizations. Hard skills are not bad, but with the expansion and availability of Google, YouTube and Wikipedia, information & credentials are no longer enough.

In the new world, establishing and maintaining relationships is the competitive advantage.

That’s exactly what the 5 Gears is aimed at. Learning how to be both “present” and “productive” when there is never enough time.

The 5 Gears is a connectivity tool that uses the analogy of a manual stick shift. Throughout our day, certain times call for different gears. Each gear is important and should be used appropriately. Unfortunately, the vast majority of us only use 2 or 3 gears and we miss out on the value of the others.

5th Gear is Focus Mode. Think of this as “being in the zone”. Time flies by, you’re extremely productive, and a lot of work gets done.

4th Gear is Task Mode. Most of the time this is multi-tasking with emails, phone calls, meetings and small interruptions throughout the day. This is where the majority of people spend their day. Learn to master 4th Gear or it can very easily master you.

3rd Gear is Social Mode. This happens during a birthday party, cookout with friends, or in other large group settings. You talk about common things like the weather and the latest happenings. You don’t go super deep but it is still good conversation.

2nd Gear is Connect Mode. This is when you have a really good conversation with someone and go deeper than you do in 3rd gear. These conversations with friends and family do not involve work.

1st Gear is Recharge Mode. This is all about learning how to rest and recharge, something most of us have trouble doing well.

He also covers Reverse, which is “Responsive Mode”. It’s all about learning how to apologize.
