Jesus rarely meets our expectations—and that’s part of what makes Him so compelling. If you’re looking for a safe and predictable king, Jesus isn’t your guy. He doesn’t come to endorse the status quo or affirm the powerful. Instead, He walks up a mountain, sits down, and begins to teach—and in doing so, He turns the whole world upside down.
Matthew 5 is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. But more than that, it’s the beginning of a revolution. Not a political revolution—Jesus doesn’t storm the palaces—but a spiritual one. He begins a revolution of the heart. He is reshaping our view of what it means to live a good and blessed life.
Many of us know the Beatitudes. Some of us can recite them. But sometimes we need to receive these blessings as though hearing them for the very first time.
And that’s our hope today: to hear Jesus’ teaching with fresh ears and to see the Kingdom He describes with fresh eyes.
When we look at what Jesus is saying, we’ll see that He is not giving us a list of virtues to strive for. He is describing the kinds of people God’s Kingdom has already come to.
So, let’s walk up the mountain with Jesus. Let’s listen like we’re sitting in the crowd for the first time—confused, hopeful, worn out, and wondering just what kind of King this is.
